All the images come from the GTO manga. Each was meticulously coloured by myself. Starting with the more recent images, the two outer ones, I'll describe the process involved. It is simple and painless, and easy to replicate with Photoshop and some patience.
Take a panel that is relatively plain and without much text and then hide any obvious blemishes with a simple black/white paint job. Using a new layer for each section of colour, roughly colour in sections. Set the coloured layers to multiply to have the original lineart show through and use the eraser to tidy it up (or selection tools to delete with accuracy). It's all very simple.
The central image was the most busy and and I tried a number of things to try and give it some depth. I started by using the cutout filter at its most detailed to bring the line art into something more useable and simple. The orange lines were dark lines that have been turned orange with light filters on the layer.
The canisters (the least satisfactory part) were simple colour in jobs which I then selected and apply a constriction to so that I can create a darker rim at the edges. The gas mask (my favourite part) was darkened using the dark outline filter, and then the plastic wrapping filter to give it that wet look.
I hunted down for Japanese fonts, which are difficult to apply on a non-Japanese PC (to type with IME style Japanese, MS Gothic will always be used). You have to find what key produces what kana, but eventually I managed to find all the relevant kana. Finally I applied a circular halftone filter to the background of the speech bubble to give it that ringed look...
To be honest, I'm most happy with the newer two images, who knows, maybe I'll even start colouring scanulations
