Not long back from the cinema. keikofun and I went to see a Chinese film called Kekexili: Mountain Patrol (ko-ko-shi-li). Set in Tibet in 1982, it is based on a true story about vigilantes who fight against poachers in the mountainous terrain of Tibet. The leader of the group is part Captain Ahab, part Wyatt Earp. A complex character, he will stop at nothing to protect the Tibetan antelope from being poached.
One of the coolest things about this film is the way it looks. It was billed as a 'Tibetan Western' and it's does go some way towards it. Armed with a mix of SKSs and AK47s, wearing coats that look like dusters when silhouetted, with horses replaced by well-trodden jeeps, there is a Peckinpah-grittiness to the film.
A really interesting film, worth checking out.
