So, it was results day. I'm pretty gutted about my Intelligence and International Security result. The other day I was told by my seminar tutor that he was disappointed because I got 60-something, to which I replied "What? I am a 60s student!" I was happy knowing that I got a 2.1. For those of you ignorant of such things, British universities (generally) have marks going: 1st, 2.1, 2.2, 3rd, Fail. 2.1 is 60+, 1st is 70+...
My issue is twofold: I like Intelligence and I want a Masters place. In the first instance, I enjoy Intelligence Studies, but I always do poorly (perhaps due to the International History element, instead of theory). So, it means I've taken modules but done poorly in them (2.2s). 2.2 is by no means bad, but it's not what I want. I strive above myself... Always have done. Furthermore, the majority of my poorer grades are from me trying different or interesting things, and so reflect my growth and the search for my niche. Now that I have it, it's too late to concentrate upon it.
Now, Masters places demand at least a 2.1. Having worked out my weighted average (a complex system known as the Cascade System), I know that unless I get 3rds or below in my final modules I will be guaranteed a 2.1 (albeit 60.7%). I also know that I can't get much better than 62% if I do my usual. Plus, the dissertation is actually most important with regards to that place. I'm doing my dissertation on a topic I want to follow through to postgraduate level, but I only got 57 overall in the preliminary Research Methods module. Not to mention I feel like the Department is really messing around with us this year... The big question is, will a low 2.1 be good enough, and even more importantly, can I get an interview in which to explain niche-finding problem. Furthermore, one of my references is from my Intelligence lecturer... Great, huh?
I am sure I can do it, but it doesn't stop the worries. If I have concentrated all this time on trying to get a Masters and not taking the TESOL course this summer, and I don't get that Masters, then I'll be worse off on all levels.
